Lappert's Ice Cream

Today is ice cream day. Actually it's the day my hubby goes back to his eye doctor who happens to be "downtown". We hardly ever go there so while we're there this morning, we're going to come back by The Pink Spot and get some of that wonderful Hawaiian ice cream known as Lappert's. We discovered this ice cream when we were in Hawaii and were excited to know that we can buy it right here at home. BTW I got the picture from Lappert's website.

Have a great week!

Noah

In the year 2008, the Lord came unto Noah, who was now living in the United States, and said: Once again, the earth has become wicked and over-populated, and I see the end of all flesh before me.

Build another Ark and save
2 of every living thing along with a few good humans.

He gave Noah the blueprints, saying: You have 6 months to build the Ark before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights.

Six months later, the Lord looked down and saw Noah weeping in his yard - but no Ark.

Noah! He roared, I'm about to start the rain! Where is the Ark?
Forgive me, Lord, begged Noah, 'but things have changed.'

I needed a building permit.

I've been arguing with the inspector about the need for a sprinkler system.

My neighbors claim that I've violated the neighborhood zoning laws by building the Ark in my yard and exceeding the height limitations. We had to go to the Development Appeal Board for a decision.

Then the Department of Transportation demanded a bond be posted for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions, to clear the passage for the Ark's move to the sea. I told them that the sea would be coming to us, but they would hear nothing of it.

Getting the wood was another problem. There's a ban on cutting local trees in order to save the spotted owl.

When I started gathering the animals, an animal rights group sued me. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodations were too restrictive, and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space.

I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls - but no go!

Then the EPA ruled that I couldn't build the Ark until they'd conducted an environmental impact study on your proposed flood.

I'm still trying to resolve a complaint with the Human Rights Commission on how many minorities I'm supposed to hire for my building crew.

Immigration and Naturalization are checking the green-card status of most of the people who want to work.

The trades unions say I can't use my sons. They insist I have to hire only Union workers with Ark-building experience.

To make matters worse, the IRS seized all my assets, claiming I'm trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species.

So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at least 10 years for me to finish this Ark.

Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine, and a rainbow stretched across the sky.

Noah looked up in wonder and asked, 'You mean you're not going to destroy the world?'

'No,' said the Lord. 'The government beat me to it.

Gloria

I met a new blogger yesterday. She left a comment on my post and I went to her blog. Her name is Becki.

In Becki's post she was talking about her Aunt Gloria who is dying with cancer. It was such a beautiful tribute to this dear lady and it reminded me of the first porcelain doll I made. I loved the name Gloria so I named this doll Gloria.

I think I improved greatly on the rest of the dolls I made, but this one is especially precious to me since it's the first one. I've changed her hair and her clothes since I took this picture, but this is how she originally looked. By the way, if you're new to viewing my blog, you might want to scroll down to the very bottom to see a scrapbook of the dolls I've made.

Have a great day!

Girly Wisdom

I received a forwarded e-mail from a friend this morning. Thought I would share it with you since I didn't have anything better to say. I'm getting ready to go out in the back yard and putter around a little - mostly to keep my hubby company as he has some projects to do out there. It's already hot out there - probably close to 90.
  • Women over 50 don't have babies because they would put them down and forget where they left them.
  • A friend of mine confused her Valium with her birth control pills...she has 14 kids but doesn't really care.
  •  One of life's mysteries is how a 2-pound box of chocolates can make a woman gain 5 lbs.
  • My mind not only wanders it sometimes leaves completely.
  • The way to forget your troubles is to wear tight shoes.
  • The nice part about living in a small town is that when you don't know what you're doing, someone else does.
  • The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight because by then your body and your fat are really good friends.
  • I gave up jogging for my health when my thighs kept rubbing together and setting fire to my pants.
  • Amazing... You hang something in your closet for a while and it shrinks 2 sizes.
  • Skinny people irritate me when they say things like... 'You know sometimes I forget to eat'... Now I've forgotten my address, my mother's maiden name and my keys, but I have never forgotten to eat. You have to be a special kind of stupid to forget to eat!
  • The trouble with some women is that they get all excited about nothing and then they marry him.
  • I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are eating too much, impulse buying, and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That's my idea of a perfect day!
Have a great day!

A Gift from Ginger

I spent the day today working on that DVD again. This computer is so different from the old one that I have to do a lot of figuring out, trial and error. Anyway, the USPS stopped by this afternoon and I was pleased to receive a gift from my niece, Ginger  (of Enchanting Cottage). Here it is - a lovely note pad with a pencil. I love what it says on top. Ginger wrote me a note on the top note. It was so sweet and it was so sweet of her to think of me when she saw it and bought it for me. Thank you again, Ginger.

It's Sunday Again

This Sunday started off pretty much like every Sunday does for us. Of course we went to church this morning. The worship was very very good as always. We stopped by the Kentucky Chicken place, and I ran in and got us a couple of dinners to take home. After we ate, the Diamondbacks were playing so Hubby watched that. I watched a little bit but not much. I had more important things to do - like play with my computer. I'm not really playing with it, I'm working on a new DVD of our trip to Hawaii. It is taking awhile because I am trying to figure out the program as I go along. I keep discovering something that I should have done, so I have to go back and change it. Just as well I didn't watch the D-back game anyway. They lost again. They are getting in a bad habit of losing. They started out the season so well. I don't know what happened to them.

Hope you are all having a great weekend.

Laundry Day

Today is laundry day. I always do the laundry on Saturday. I just got to thinking about how doing laundry has changed since I was a kid. My earliest memory of washing machines was the old wringer type similar to the one pictured above. My grandmother had one on her screened in back porch. We never had a washing machine in our home, or I should say "many homes" because I couldn't even count the number of different places I lived as a child.

We always did our laundry in a help-yourself laundry where they had old wringer type washing machines. Going to the laundry was always kind of exciting for me. I can still almost smell the soap and bleach that permeated those places. Usually there were several machines with rinsing tubs by them in an open kind of building with a cement floor. There were two or three big tubs next to the machine so when you ran the clothes through the wringer they went into the rinsing tubs. You would start with the white clothes and end up with dark ones washed in the same water. By the time you got to the last load, the water was pretty dirty. I loved to put the clothes through the wringer. My mother would always warn me not to get my hand caught in the wringer. I was very careful because I sure didn't want that to happen. Even when I was in high school, we were still going to this old kind of laundry. We would bring the clothes home and I would help my mother hang them on the clothes line. I remember we always ran a damp rag over the lines to clean them off before hanging the clothes. It was kind of amazing to me how that in Oklahoma when the weather was freezing, the clothes would freeze as soon as you hung them on the line. They went ahead and dried though. I guess they were freeze-dried.

When I got married, we had an automatic washing machine on our screened in back porch but we didn't have a dryer. The clothes were still hung on a line. I remember when we got our first clothes dryer. I loved the way it made the towels so soft. We have a very nice Maytag washing machine and dryer now and let me tell you, I do appreciate them. For fifty years now I've been doing the laundry in an automatic washing machine but I'm kinda glad I grew up in the wringer machine days. I do have fond memories of those days, but I sure wouldn't want to go back to them.

Angels

Show and Tell

I thought about doing another doll post today, but for some reason I was thinking "Angels." So, angels it is. We have quite a few of them scattered around our house. Here are some of them that I have photographed.

I was going to put this one last but I have a terrible time arranging pictures in the order I want them to appear. I think blogspot could do a better job of adding pictures, but I won't complain too much since it's free. This is one of the dolls I made when I was making porcelain dolls. I just decided to make an angel out of this one.

The one immediately below is one I painted at one of those pottery places where you paint the piece you pick out and they fire it for you. My daughter and I were into that for awhile when she first moved to Phoenix. We went once a week and painted bowls, platters, etc. One time I decided to paint this angel.

This one is a music box (Christmas music).

This last one has special meaning for me because it was given to me by a special lady at our church who later passed away at a young age with cancer.

I hope you have enjoyed my angel collection. To see other Show & Tell posts, visit Kelli's place. You can click at the Show & Tell icon at the beginning of this post to go there.

Doll House and Doll House Dolls

This doll house belongs to my daughter. I'm not sure. Maybe it now belongs to me. I can't remember if she gave it to me or if she just wanted me to keep it in my doll room because she didn't want it in her house anymore. Anyway, she started putting it together many years ago and before she got finished, she lost interest in it. So, she thought I might finish it. So far I haven't done any more on it. She was making it at the same time I was making dolls, so she asked me to make some dolls for her doll house. I have made dolls of all sizes, but the doll house doll were by far the hardest to make. Their clothes were especially hard to make because they are so tiny. Another one of my dolls got in the picture at the top left. She is sitting on the window seat. I wrote about this doll sometime back in January I think. It was one of my first posts and I started my blog on January 12.

These are the dolls I made for the doll house.

I haven't posted anything about my dolls in quite awhile, so thought I would get back to them. There is a scrapbook at the bottom of my blog with pictures of other dolls I have made if you are interested in looking at them.

Miniature Tea Sets

First I want to thank Ruthie for the Blogger Buddy award. It is so cute, with two little kittens on it. Kathi had given me the same award so it was already on my sidebar, but I was so pleased to receive the award from Ruthie as well. You can check it out on my sidebar just above the singing birdies.

Thought I would like to share these pictures of my miniature tea sets and tea cup. All of these except the last one are in my doll room. I'm trying out one of the features on my new computer - blurring the edges.

This one is in the dining room.

Yesterday I worked almost all day trying to get my e-mail to working. Today I finally gave in and called the company and got some help. Now I can send and receive e-mails. Yeah! ! !

Old Cars

Yippee. The old cars that I talked about last week were not back at the church, but two other cars were there. The ones there before were 1940 Fords. These were Chevrolets. I think they are 1956 models. Back in the '50s I knew what make and year almost all the cars were. Of course there were not nearly as many different ones as there are now. I especially liked Buicks, Pontiacs and pink Cadillac convertibles. Anyway, I'm off the subject. Today when I saw these old cars parked at the church, I immediately drug my camera out of my purse and shot a couple of pictures. These two cars were visual aids for the sermon series - "The Old Made New". Here's the picture I took.

Father's Day

Many times Mother's Day is celebrated and given great emphasis, but not Father's Day. Our children have always treated Mother's Day and Father's Day equally. We will enjoy being with them today.

My father passed away almost 10 years ago. I thought I would post a few pictures of him in tribute.

My Dad at age 16.

We lived in this trailer for a short time. I like this picture because I am peeking out through the window in the door.

Here's a closer look.

He was a trucker for most of his adult life. Here he is by his truck in Colorado where it was being loaded with lumber. He hauled it to Nebraska.

This was taken at his 50th Anniversary party. He hated dressing up but he really enjoyed this party. I think he looks pretty happy in this photo.

I want to wish all you fathers out there a very Happy Father's Day.

By the way, I had to go back to the old computer to finish this post because I couldn't find some of the pictures. I've got a lot of organizing to do.

My New Computer

The Fed Ex delivery brought my new iMac computer this morning and we just got it set up. I am doing this post on it. Wow! I am amazed. I think I'm going to love this. It is so so different from my PC though, I am going to have a lot to learn. I'd better get started learning stuff. This is the first thing I tried to do and it seems to work great. I'll be back tomorrow to post something for Father's Day.

More Brighton Things

Show and Tell

Today for Show & Tell, I decided to feature some more of my Brighton stuff. I've already featured some of my Brighton jewelry and Brighton tins. I am really a Brighton fan as you can tell.

This is a night light my daughter brought me from a business trip she made. She often brings Hubby and me mementos from her trips. This light is light sensitive so it comes on automatically when it starts getting dark. Since it's in the powder room with no outside windows, it stays on almost all the time.

Eye glass case I keep my sunglasses in. I keep this in my purse all the time as well as the following two items.

This is a lipstick holder Hubby bought me several years ago. It is really handy to carry in my purse.

Brighton key ring, of course.

Thank you for visiting my Show & Tell. You can click on the Show & Tell icon to take you to Kelli's place where there is a list of other blogger's Show & Tell. There are always many interesting posts there.

Vintage Thursday

I discovered the Apron Queen had a new Thursday thing called Vintage Thingies. It's similar to the Show & Tell that Kelli does on Fridays but this is just for vintage things and it is on Thursdays. I have been planning to participate in this for over a month. Seems like every week it just wasn't convenient for me to do it but today I decided I would take the leap.

Being the "old" lady that I am I have quite a bit of vintage stuff. When I saw the picture to the left it reminded me of the mixer my parents gave us for one of our wedding gifts. It's amazing that I still have this old mixer as I haven't used it in many many years. But I hated to get rid of it for sentimental reasons. It was out in a cabinet in the garage. I told my Hubby what I was going to do so he dug it out for me and cleaned it up some. (Wasn't that sweet of him). Then I brought it in the house and took this picture.

The old mixer still looks pretty good. Both of the bowls got broken years ago and the beaters are missing. It had a juicer that sat on top of it that I had until just recently when I cleaned out my kitchen drawers and got rid of it. This is a Sunbeam Mixmaster. I remember my Mom saying this was the best mixer made then. We also got a Sunbeam hand mixer for our wedding. I remember being a little distressed when we got the hand mixer thinking "We don't need two mixers." But I was wrong. I ended up using the hand mixer much more than the large one.

This is a platter to the set of dishes my parents also gave us for our wedding. I still use the platter, but not the rest of the dishes. I love dishes and have bought lots of different ones in the last 50 years. Many sets have come and gone.
Thank you for visiting my Vintage Thingies post.
