SPIRITUAL SUNDAYS

When I saw this graphic on CrossDaily.com I thought "What an important lesson this picture illustrates. I should share this for Spiritual Sundays," so here it is.

And these words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).

Obviously the teaching of each generation is of highest importance. We teach our children many things, but the most important is to teach them about God, his Son, his love and his laws.

I was impressed with this account of his early teaching written by Phillip Johnson.

"My earliest childhood memory is a pre-kindergarten Sunday school class. I suppose I was four years old—maybe even younger. Our church was an old, imposing building that smelled like someone's attic. The windows in our classroom were huge, and I loved the way the sun shone in. I was mesmerized by those little particles of dust that dance in the sunbeams in a dusty room.
I clearly remember one Sunday sitting in that room and learning the song "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam." Our teacher eagerly pointed to the huge streams of light coming in the windows, and she tried to make them an object lesson.

The only trouble was, none of us understood anything about metaphors. All I could think of when we sang that song were those shiny little specks floating in the shaft of light, and I couldn't figure out why Jesus would want me to be one of those. I loved the song, but I have to admit it made no sense to me.

That memory is so deeply etched in my mind that even today when I hear "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam," I am immediately transported back to that old room with the big windows, and those little flecks of sunlit dust come to mind.

My own kids are now older than I was then, and one day several years ago it suddenly occurred to me that the earliest memories they would carry to adulthood had already been formed. Nearly everything they are learning now will stay with them for the rest of their lives."

I'll bet a lot of you are believers today because of what you were taught at a very young age. The first remembrance I have of hearing about God and Jesus was when I was about 7 years old. A lady in the neighborhood where my cousin lived held a little class for the neighborhood children. I remember telling my Mom I wanted to be baptized. She said I was too young to know what I was doing. We were not attending church anywhere at that time. When we did start going to church I was about 10 and the reason we started was because I told my Mom I wanted to ride the church bus to a Methodist church in our town because it came to our neighborhood. She told me that if I wanted to go to church we would go to the Church of Christ (the church she had been brought up in) and guess what? That church also had a bus so we started riding it. From that time on my mother and I never missed a service unless we were sick or as they say "providentially hindered." I asked my Mom why we had not gone to church sooner. She said that she took me to Sunday School when I was really small. I don't remember it at all but I have a feeling that the things I learned back then even before I could remember it had an impact on my life. As I look back, God had a purpose for my life and he has led me all the way until this very day. And I am so thankful for that.

  1. HI!!
I agree a child is never to young to learn the importance of serving God, Praying with a young child does make an impact on their life forever.
I pray with my little Granddaughter everyday and I believe God has a plan and a purpose for her.
    God Bless you Charlotte

  2. Hi Charlotte,
Some of my most precious memories are of sitting in church beside my beloved grandmother. I remember being three years old and drinking in everything the preacher was saying. I just hung on to every word. I remember being in Sunday School too and learning all about Jesus and what He did for me on the cross. I always yearned to know more. Those days and those services impacted me for the rest of my life and I hold them dear in my heart! Thanks for sharing this today.

    Have a lovely Sunday.

    Blessings,
    Sandi

  3. The Lord has ways higher than ours and by telling us to teach our children about Him really makes a big difference in guiding them to be on the right path that leads to the Lord. When He is far from their hearts, it will be hard to see this one, long, narrow road. Instead, there are so many distractions left and right that they notice first and thus, their focus on just one right path seems obscured. Thank you for sharing this powerful message. Have a great weekend.

  5. What a great post Charlotte! Sunday School teachers are so important and I am so thankful that I was able to have my kids in church learning about the Lord since they were born. I did not know him until I was an adult but praise the Lord I had a friend that took me some as a child and I remember those times.

May we all be a light for Jesus each and every day!

Love you Charlotte and oh ya, thankyou for helping me and Clif out with my, what did he call it? ...trigger finger the other day ;) LOL

  12. Oh! Charlotte,
You are so right, most of what we learn about God is in our early childhood, and I am so thankful for parents and grandparents who taught me about this wonderful loving and caring God. Such a great post, thank you for this wonderful memory, and thank you and Ginger for for being the most gracious hostesses that you are.
    Blessings,
    Sue

  14. This is so true, Charlotte! Of all the things that parents want for their children, what my husband and I prayed for was salvation for our children and grandchildren. Parents have more influence in their kids' lives than they sometimes realize, but they DO hear you, if you teach them!

  15. And a little child shall lead them. How wonderful the Lord used a friend to lead you to a Bible study that led you to the Lord, that led your Mom back to church. What an awesome testimony!

I would have to say my earliest recollections would have to be when I was about 10 years old and we (including my sister Michele whom you just had tea with!) lived with my Grandmother and great Grandmother for 3 years. My great Grandmother was an awesome prayer warrior. She knew the troubles in our family and bathed us in prayer. I first heard the Gospel from reading the Bible to her (she was an invalid) and listening to Billy Graham's Hour of Decision radio program. My heart was not yet ready, but the seeds were sown.

    Have a blessed Sunday!

  21. Hi Charlotte,
I too was a "bus child". It's the only way I got to Sunday School and church. I will be forever grateful for the bus driver and his faithfulness every week.
Thanks for your comment today. You can hear him sing if you click on the web site at the end of my blog.

  22. Charlotte,
Thank you for sharing your early childhood memories with us today. I think I was about 10 when my Aunt Mary took my sisters and I to Sunday school with my cousins. My parents did not attend church and did not take me or my sisters to church (I never saw them in church until my wedding when I was 19.) Yet, I've always had a yearning for God and I'm thankful for that.

    Blessings,
    Jean
